Softball Splits on the Road Against Newberry

Newberry, SC -- Catawba spilt on the road to Newberry in a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader at Smith Road Complex on Tuesday afternoon. The Catawba took game one 5-2 and Newberry took game two 5-3. The Wolves are now 24-14 on the year and 5-5 in conference, while the Lady Indians are 19-18 overall and 7-5 in conference.

The Lady Indians would break the silence scoring two runs in the third. Delane Smith would double to centerfield scoring Allie Baker. Monica Taylor would immediately follow with a single up the middle scoring Smith.

The wolves return in the third scoring one run. Sydney Patterson would ground out to second base scoring Myranda Dills. Catawba would gain another two runs in the fourth. Carlee Brawley scoring on a passed ball. Leah Huggins would homer to left field on a 3-2 count. Newberry would follow with a run in the fourth from Paige Meyer grounded out to short stop for the RBI; Ashley Willis scored.

Catawba would add their last run in the seventh with Taylor singling up the middle to score smith.

Newberry would come out strong in game two scoring three runs in the first inning. Meyer would single to right field scoring Tori Caldwell. Haley Wildes would follow with a double to right field scoring Willis; and Meyer scoring on a throwing error made by right field.

Catawba would immediately follow and score all three of their runs in the second. Taylor would score on a fielder’s choice to the shortstop hit by Brawley. Grace Holland would score on another Fielder’s choice hit by Huggins to the second basemen. Brawley would score of a single to the pitcher hit by Baker.

Newbery would pick up another run in the second from Daphne Peyton homering to left center. Newberry would score their last run in the third from Peyton doubling to right field and Wildes scoring.

Preston Ellenberg would take the win in Game one giving up only two runs and one walk in her four and a partial innings on the mound. She would improve to 6-2 overall. Anna Jasper would take the loss falling to 0-3 overall and giving up a total of three hits and one walk in the one and a partial inning she pitched.

Catawba travel to Anderson on Thursday for a 1 pm doubleheader.
