Baseball Defeats Mount Olive in Midweek Game
SALISBURY, N.C. - - The Catawba Indians host the Mount Olive Trojans for a midweek non-conference game on Tuesday in Newman Park. Catawba defeated Mount Olive 13-9 to improve their record to 23-18, while the Trojans fall to 26-11-1.
Caleb Link improved his record to 1-0 gaining the win for the Indians. Chance Bowden led the offense with three hits and five RBIs. Heath Mitchem and Kyle Smith also added three hits for Catawba.
Catawba jumped on the board quick in the bottom half of the first inning. Bowden and Luke Setzer each hit two-run homers to give the Indians a 4-0 after one complete. Mount Olive got two runs back to cut into the lead in the top of the second, but the Indians answered tacking on three more runs in the bottom half of the inning.
The Trojans scored an unearned run in the third and held Catawba scoreless to make the score 7-3 going into the fourth inning. A 1-2-3 double play ended a bases load jam for the Indians in the top of the fourth to keep Mount Olive off the board.
Mount Olive plated three runs in the top of the fifth to cut Catawba’s advantage to one run. The Trojans tacked on two more runs in the sixth inning to gain a short lived 8-7 lead. The Indians scored six runs on seven hits in the sixth to regain a 13-8 lead over Mount Olive. The Trojans scratched one more run across the plate in the top of the ninth to make it a 13-9 final score.
Catawba will host Lincoln Memorial for their last home South Atlantic Conference series beginning on Friday at 6 pm.
