Softball Drops Doubleheader to Wingate
Salisbury, N.C -- Catawba fell short at home against Wingate in a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader at Whitley Field on Wednesday afternoon. The Bulldogs took game one 4-3 and 4-2 in game two. The Bulldogs are now 18-24 on the year and 6-8 in conference, while the Lady Indians are 19-22 overall and 7-9 in conference.
Wingate would come out swinging in the second scoring all four of their runs for game one. Mikayla Hannah would start things off with a homerun to center field of a 1-2-count. Gracyn Polk would score an unearned run of a fielding error made by the third basemen. Aubrey Reep would double to leftfield scoring both Rebekah Woods and Kaitlyn Knuckles.
Aubrey Reep would take the win in game one for the Bulldogs improving to 13-9 overall giving up five hits and striking out eight batters. Brook Walser would take the loss for The Lady Indians setting her back to 5-11 overall giving up two hits and two walks as well as having two strike outs in the five and a partial innings she pitched.
In game two the teams would scatter their runs. Both teams would pick up their first run in the first. Haley Cashwell from Wingate would score on a fielding error made by the short stop. Leah Huggins from Catawba would score from a fly out to left field from Delane Smith.
The Bulldogs would pick up two more runs in the third. Hannah would hit another homerun to left field on a 3-2 count scoring Emma Swenson. Catawba would add an additional run in the third. Monica Taylor would triple to left field scoring Kaylee Cook.
Wingate would pick up their last run in the fifth. Jordan Floyd would single through the left side scoring Polk.
Rachel Weidner would take the win in game two giving up two hits and one walk in her four innings on the mound. She would improve to 3-9 overall. Madison Hunter take the loss falling to 8-5 overall and giving up a total of five hits and four walks in the four innings she pitched.
Catawba host Lander on Sunday for a 2 pm doubleheader.
