Eighth Inning Rally Sends Baseball Past Barton
SALISBURY, N.C. - - Catawba host the Barton Bulldogs in a midweek non-conference baseball game on Tuesday in Newman Park. The Catawba Indians scored ten runs in the bottom of the eighth to win the game 16-10, improving their overall record to 25-20 while the Bulldogs fall to 12-33.
Chance Bowden led the Indians at the plate with four hits and four RBI. Luke Setzer and Heath Mitchem each added two hits with three and one RBI, respectively.
Barton drew a leadoff walk followed by a single through the left side to put runners on first and second. The Bulldogs then hit three consecutive homeruns to post five runs on the board in the opening frame. The Indians answered with two runs including a Bowden homer to left field.
Barton scored four unearned runs in the second on two 2-run homers in the second to take a 9-2 lead. Jacob Nester drew a full-count walk and scored on Jason Curtis ground out to short to earn a run back in the bottom half of the inning.
The Indians tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning to cut the Bulldogs lead to four. Barton scored just one more run in the top of the fifth to take a 10-5 advantage.
Riley Myers, Connor Johnson, Greg Brown, and Hunter Shepherd combined for four shutout innings, allowing just two hits. The Indians were able to plate another run in the bottom of the sixth, cutting the deficit to four. Catawba was scoreless in the seventh before sending 10 runners across the plate in the eighth inning to take the win.
The Indians will travel to Wingate University as they play their final South Atlantic Conference regular season series beginning Friday at 6 pm.
