Women Sixth, Men Eighth After Day 1 of SAC Track & Field Championships
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Catawba began the two-day South Atlantic Conference Track and Field Championships on Thursday at the Belk Track on the campus of Johnson C. Smith University. The Catawba Indians are sixth in the women’s standings with six points, while the men are eighth with 6.5 points. The Championships will conclude on Friday.
Catawba got points in women’s action from Hannah Mercer and Nikki Elminowski in the 10000 meters. Mercer went fourth in a time of 41.20.78 to earn four points with Elminowski picking up two points with her seventh-place finish in a time of 41:50.88.
For the men, Dallas Vann placed fifth in the pole vault, clearing 3.50m to grab 3.5 points. Michal Swepson earned three points as he finished sixth in the 3000m steeplechase. He had a season best time of 10:08.30.
Catawba qualified a male and a female into the 1500 meter finals and a runner in the men’s 800 final. Ethan Bemis had a season best 4:02.47 and was fourth in the men’s 1500 qualifying. Abbie Adams qualified for the women’s 1500 final with a season best 4:54.80 that put her sixth. Tom Joyce had a 1:57.57 to qualify in seventh for the men’s 800.
AJ Meadows is competing in the decathlon and is in sixth after the first day’s five events with 2,353 points. Below is his results in each of the events. Tomorrow will see the nine athletes compete in the 110 hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500m.
