Raper Perfect at Plate in Loss to Wingate
WINGATE, N.C. - - Catawba baseball traveled to Wingate University for game one of the South Atlantic Conference series on Friday evening in Ron Christopher Stadium. The Catawba Indians fell to the Bulldogs 2-8 dropping to 25-21 overall and 17-8 in the SAC, while Wingate improves to 34-13 and 17-8.
Jackson Raper went perfect at the plate going 4-for-4 with two RBI to lead the Indians. Chance Bowden, Luke Setzer, and Hunter Shepherd had the remaining three hits for Catawba.
Hunter Mitchem reached on a two-out throwing error in the opening inning. Setzer singled to advance him to second and Mitchem scored on a Raper single to put the first run on the board. A two-run homer in the bottom half gave Wingate the 2-1 lead at the end of the first.
The Bulldogs added four runs on three hits in the bottom of the third. Raper homered to right field to gain a run back for Catawba in the fourth.
Wingate tacked on a run in the fourth and fifth innings to increase their lead. The Indians were able to keep the Bulldogs from scoring after the fifth inning but were unable to plate any runs of their own.
Catawba and Wingate will finish the series on Saturday at Wingate.
