Eakes Dominates Face-Offs to Propel Men's Lacrosse Into SAC Tournament
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba secured its spot in the upcoming South Atlantic Conference Men’s Lacrosse Tournament with a 14-10 victory over visiting Tusculum on Saturday night at Shuford Stadium. The Catawba Indians avoided a draw to break a three-way tie had they lost, improving to 6-8 overall and 4-4 in the SAC. The Pioneers fall to 4-9 and 2-6.
Catawba pulled away late, turning a 9-7 third-quarter deficit into a 14-9 fourth-quarter lead as the Indians put together a seven-goal run over an 18-minute span. Justin Warnock, Chase Scott and Cole Fanzo each had two goals in the winning run.
Connor Eakes helped Catawba control play as he won 21 of his 24 face-offs and grabbed a school record 18 ground balls. The 21 face-off wins tied a school mark. With the advantage, Catawba was able to outshoot the Pioneers 65-32.
Cook and Fanzo each had three goals and an assist for Catawba. Scott, Warnock and Eakes all had two goals. Hunter Cheuvront made 10 saves, all after the opening quarter.
Nate Wade led Tusculum with three goals and two assists. Chris Ryan also had three goals. Patrick Thomas posted 21 saves for the Pioneers.
Catawba will travel to Queens on Tuesday in the first round of the SAC Tournament.
