Tilley Nabs SAC Women's Lacrosse Freshman of the Year Honors
ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Catawba’s Brooklyn Tilley has been named the 2018 South Atlantic Conference Women’s Lacrosse Freshman of the Year, highlighting the postseason awards for the Lady Indians. Ines Flueck, of Lenoir-Rhyne, grabbed Player of the Year honors, while LR’s Carlee Buck was the Coach of the Year. It was announced by the league office on Thursday.
Tilley is Catawba’s third Freshman of the Year in the past four years, joining teammates Hannah Scott and Gianna Pezzulo, who earned the honor in 2015 and 2017, respectively. Tilley, a midfielder, has started all 18 games for the Lady Indians. She leads the team with 38 goals and has added four assists. Tilley has also posted a team best 37 draw control wins with 22 ground balls and 14 caused turnovers.
Nicole Hunt was Catawba’s lone selection on the All-SAC First Team. The sophomore middie has scored 31 goals with 22 assists on the year. Hunt shares the team lead with 45 ground balls, while winning 34 draw controls and causing 30 turnovers.
Four players earned second team honors. Pezzulo and Katie Barth at attack along with defenders Scott and Becky Frost. Pezzulo, a sophomore has handed out a school record 38 assists on the season with 33 goals. Barth is second on the team with 37 goals and has six assists. Scott shares team highs with 32 caused turnovers and 45 ground balls. Frost has scored a dozen goals to go with 43 ground balls and 18 caused turnovers.
Joining Tilley as honorable mention picks were attack Erin Green, middie Imani Grays and defender Kennadi Holt. Green, a junior, has scored 35 goals with 14 assists on the year. Grays, a junior, has notched 22 goals and won 34 draw controls. Holt, a senior, has scooped up 29 ground balls and caused 17 turnovers.
Flueck, a senior from Coppell, Texas, ranks No. 2 in the conference in goals-against average, allowing 11.16 goals per game, and she is fourth in save percentage, with a .447 save percentage. Buck earns her first Coach of the Year honor after leading the Bears to their first-ever SAC Championship with a perfect 8-0 record in conference.
The SAC Tournament semifinals begin on Friday at Wingate University. Catawba will face Queens at 7 pm.
