Baseball Falls to Elimination Bracket After Loss to Anderson
KODAK, Tenn. -- Anderson pulled off its second upset in as many days as the eighth-seeded Trojans knocked off top-seeded Catawba 4-1 in the first game of the double elimination portion of the Pilot/Flying J South Atlantic Conference Baseball Tournament on Friday afternoon. The tournament is being held at Smokies Stadium, home of the Double-A Tennessee Smokies and runs through Monday.
Anderson’s Austin Todd took a perfect game into the eighth as the Trojan shut down the Catawba offense. Todd’s perfect bid was broken up by Joe Butts, who singled with two outs in the eighth. The Indians made some noise in the ninth as Lee Poteat and Jason Curtis led off the frame with singles. A one-out error loaded the bases, but Catawba managed only a run on a fielder’s choice by Heath Mitchem as Todd closed the game out to improve to 5-4.
Michael Elwell (4-4) threw seven shutout frames to keep Catawba tied. Anderson finally broke through in the eighth with four runs. Jackson Strange led off with a double and scored when Brandon Odachowski reached on an error. Elwell was lifted after an ensuing walk to Joseph Strange.
A bunt single by Trevor Weisner loaded the bases and William Thomas singled home two to make it 3-0. Matthew Overton was hit by a pitch with two outs to force home Anderson’s final run.
The Trojans managed just four hits, but drew four walks and benefitted from the eighth-inning error. Catawba had just four bases runners with the three singles and the error.
Catawba will be back in action on Saturday at noon, facing either Wingate or Tusculum in an elimination game.
