Softball Ends Season With SAC Tournament Loss to Coker
ANDERSON, S.C. -- Catawba closed out its softball season with a 7-0 loss to Coker in the first round of the South Atlantic Conference Tournament. Coker, seeded second, improves to 34-15 and advance to tomorrow’s semifinals. The Catawba Indians end their season at 20-26.
Coker did all the damage they needed with a four-run first inning. After a hit batter and a walk, Maria Williamson doubled home run. Hannah Price followed with a two-run double and Hannah Goodman capped the scoring with a two-out RBI single. Price produced the final runs on a three-run homer in the sixth.
The Lady Indians had left the bases loaded in the first after a leadoff single by Leah Huggins, a one-out walk to Kaylee Cook and a two-out walk to Taylor Martin. Allie Baker finished with two of Catawba’s four hits.
Price accounted for five RBI on her two hits for Coker. She had the only multi-hit game for the Cobras, who collected seven hits. Christine Carver improved to 17-6 as she tossed five shutout innings on three hits with eight strikeouts. Taylor Forehand finished the game and fanned three over two innings.
The contest marked the final game for Head Coach Nan Whitley, who retires after taking Catawba from the slo-pitch to the fast-pitch era. She recorded 626 wins over 29 seasons. In total, Whitley posted 815 wins as the head coach of Catawba’s softball program, beginning in 1983. She earned another 128 victories in 19 years at the helm of the field hockey program.
