Myers' Gem Advances Baseball to Championships Monday
KODAK, Tenn. -- Riley Myers tossed a five-hit shutout as Catawba survived another elimination game and advanced to championship day of the Pilot/Flying J South Atlantic Conference Baseball Tournament with a 7-0 win over Carson-Newman on Sunday afternoon at Smokies Stadium. The top-seeded Catawba Indians, now 29-22, will have to win two games on Monday to win the tournament. The Eagles fall to 28-22.
Myers got out of a second and third, one-out jam in the bottom of the first and mostly cruised from there. The Eagles never had two runners on at the same time in an inning after that. Myers sat down the final 10 he faced. He walked none, hit one batter and fanned six to improve to 3-6.
The Indians got Myers all the runs he would need in the third. Catawba put together four straight singles to get the game’s first run home on a hit by Jackson Raper. Joe Butts’ fielder’s choice brought in the second run.
Catawba padded the lead with four runs in the sixth. With two outs and a runner on, Kyle Smith walked. Chance Bowden followed with a RBI single and Heath Mitchem did the same. Luke Setzer doubled home a run and Raper singled another in.
Anderson and Lincoln Memorial will play the final game on Sunday with the winner to face Catawba at 1 pm. Lincoln Memorial is currently the only team without a loss.
