Baseball Forces Decisive Final Game at SAC Tournament
KODAK, Tenn. -- Catawba pitched a second straight shutout, topping Lincoln Memorial 9-0, to force a decisive final game of the Pilot/Flying J South Atlantic Conference Baseball Tournament later on Monday afternoon. The top-seeded Catawba Indians won a third consecutive elimination game and improved to 30-22. The Railsplitters fall to 35-19 after dropping their first game of the tournament.
Hunter Shepherd (5-2) and a pair of relievers combined on the shutout. Shepherd blanked LMU over five frames before exiting in the sixth. Clay Young came on after a pair of singles to start the frame, but got out of trouble with a pop up, fly out and ground out to get the Railsplitters off the scoreboard.
Young went on to toss two and two-thirds of perfect relief with three strikeouts. Greg Brown issued one walk over his inning and a third with one strikeout. Shepherd scattered six hits with three walks and seven punchouts.
Jackson Raper provided the first two Catawba runs with a double in the fourth. He scored on a single by Jacob Nester for a 3-0 lead. Lee Poteat singled home a run in the sixth then the Indians put the game away with five in the seventh. Raper singled home two more in that frame with Cameron Morrison also singling home two.
Nester finished with three hits. Raper drove in four on hits two hits. Kyle Smith, Heath Mitchem and Poteat each collected two hits.
