Career-high 25 kill from Harrison propels Volleyball to upset of CNSALISBURY, NC – Catawba College played spoiler on Halloween, getting a career-high 25 kills from junior Crissi Harrison (Hickory, NC) and knocking off South Atlantic Conference co-leader Carson-Newman in volleyball action on Friday night at Goodman Gym. The Lady Indians dropped the opening game, but rallied to take the next three to improve to 16-11 overall and 7-5 in the SAC. Carson-Newman drops to 21-9 and 10-2, falling a game back of Presbyterian with two league matches remaining. Catawba won by the scores of 27-30, 30-26, 30-27, 30-26. The match was tightly contested throughout the four games. Late in the opening frame, Catawba used a kill and block by Harrison and an ace by Hope Miller (Newton, NC) to take a 24-22 lead. The Lady Eagles used a kill an ace by Jennifer Holmes (Franklin, TN) to tie the game at 25-25 and took the lead at 26-25 on a kill by Meg Davis (Birmingham, AL). A kill by Summer Zuck (Kingston, TN) tied the game at 27-27, but Carson-Newman won the final three points to take the game. Game two was knotted at 17-17, but Carson-Newman used Catawba errors and a kill by Jenna Rust (Lindale, TX) to take a 20-17 lead. Catawba then scored six of the next eight points to go up 23-22 before Rust tied the game with a kill. The Lady Indians took five of the next six points to lead 28-24 and after the Lady Eagles cut the lead to 28-26 on a pair of kills by Holmes, Harrison closed out the game with two kills. The third game was much like the second as Carson-Newman held a 20-16 lead, but Zuck had a kill and an ace and Elizabeth Hewitt (Hickory, NC) two kills to bring Catawba within 21-20. Harrison would tie the game at 23-23 on a kill and kept Catawba within 27-26 with a kill and block. Hewitt would kill three of the next four points to give Catawba the game. Catawba led 27-19 in the fourth game after two kills and a block by Hewitt capped a four-point run. Carson-Newman responded with five straight points with Holmes having a block and two kills in the run. Miller ended the run with a kill and the team’s traded points with Harrison killing the final two for the Lady Indians, giving the win to Catawba. Hewitt and Miller also reached double figures in kills for Catawba with 15 and 14, respectively. Miller added 32 digs, while Hewitt added seven blocks. Setter Nicole Scheidt (China Grove, NC) recorded 65 assists. Rust led Carson-Newman with 19 kills and added three blocks. Holmes followed Rust with 18 kills, while Blaire Young (Morristown, TN) registered 20 digs. Kari Gibson (Celina, OH) had 55 assists.
