Bowden Named ABCA Second Team All-American
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Chance Bowden capped the 2018 post season baseball awards by claiming second team All-America honors from ABCA/Rawlings. Bowden was a consensus first team All-Southeast Region pick by the ABCA, NCBWA and CoSIDA. He was named the Southeast Region Position Player of the Year by the ABCA and the NCBWA.
The senior first baseman led the team with a .388 average, collecting 90 hits over his 54 games. Bowden also topped the team in home runs (18), RBI (66) and slugging pct. (.724). He led the South Atlantic Conference in hits, home runs, RBI and total bases (168). Bowden stood third in slugging percentage, fourth in doubles (20) and fifth in batting average.
In the national stats as teams entering the NCAA II National Tournament, Bowden stands seventh in total hits and fourth in total bases. He ranks in the top 20 in home runs (14th), RBI (18th) and doubles (20th). Bowden is 25th in home runs per game (0.33), 26th in slugging percentage and 29th in RBI per game (1.22).
Bowden finished his Catawba career as the all-time leader with 84 doubles which included a record eight-game stretch with a double in 2016. He also set doubles marks for a game (4) and a season (31). His three-home-run game in February of this season tied the school record that was achieved eight other times.
Bowden’s 224 games played is second only to the 226 played by David Thomas. Bowden had more at bats (905) and put outs (1,637) than anyone to wear a Catawba uniform. In 2016, he produced a 21-game hitting streak that stands seventh all-time and marks one of only 10 times a Catawba player has reached a hitting streak of at least 20 games.
Bowden’s 216 RBI ranks second on the all-time list, while his 303 hits stands third. He is seventh with 194 runs scored and ninth with 39 career home runs.
