Catawba Athletics Announces Three Staff Additions
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College Athletic Director, Larry Leckonby, has announced three additions to the athletic staff. Joining Catawba is Wayne Adams, as the Director of Sports Performance, Waymond Jackson, as an assistant coach for football, and Derrick Wall, as assistant basketball coach.
Adams comes to Catawba from Sacred Heart University where he served as the Associate Head Strength and Conditioning Coach. He was in charge of the year-round strength and conditioning programs for men’s basketball, women’s basketball, women’s volleyball, wrestling, and track and field while assisting with the football program. Adams also was charged with running the internship and work-study programs for the department.
Prior to Sacred Heart, Adams served as a Graduate Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach at Morehead State University where he also completed his Master’s degree in Health and Human Performance in 2014. A 2010 graduate of James Madison University with a B.S. in kinesiology, Adams was a member of the wrestling team. He served as an intern at James Madison before working as a volunteer strength and conditioning coach at Wake Forest University and the University of Richmond.
Jackson will serve the football staff as safeties coach. He comes to Catawba with eight years of coaching experience, most recently at East Ridge High School, where he served as co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. Jackson began his coaching career at his alma mater, the University of South Carolina, in 2010. During his time on staff, the Gamecocks boasted a combined record of 31-9 and registered wins in both the Capital One and Outback Bowls. Jackson served as interim linebackers coach during the Capital One Bowl victory.
In addition to coaching at the University of South Carolina, Jackson spent the past five seasons as a defensive coordinator in the high school ranks. He has coached in Colorado, Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina. His high school stops have been highlighted by one Shrine Bowl selection, one Under-Armour All American selection, a state leader in interceptions, a state-leading defense in sacks, and the Tally Johnson assistant of the year award.
Wall comes to Catawba following a successful tenure on the Adidas Gauntlet Summer Circuit as well as being the Associate Head Coach at Woodside High School in Newport News, Va. With the Adidas Gauntlet Summer Circuit, Wall led Team Loaded NC to an 88% winning percentage in his three years and a #2 finish in the 2017 Gauntlet Finale 17 Division. At Woodside from 2015-17, Wall helped lead the team to the District and Regional Championship as well as a state semi-final appearance.
Wall began his coaching career at Anson High School in Wadesboro N.C., serving as an assistant coach for two years. While at Anson, he helped them reach the state playoffs both seasons, including a conference championship in his final year. A 2015 graduate from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, Wall earned a bachelor’s degree in exercise science with a concentration in sports management. He has coached and mentored 40+ players that have gone on to the Division 1 level and several into NBA and professional ranks.
