Harris-Morgan Named as New Catawba Head Softball Coach
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College Director of Athletics, Larry Leckonby, has announced that Amanda ‘Mandy’ Harris-Morgan has been hired as the school’s new Head Softball Coach. Harris-Morgan will be just the second coach to guide the softball fast pitch program and comes to Catawba after serving as the Head Coach at the University of West Georgia from 2011-2016.
“We are excited to have someone with Mandy’s credentials come to Catawba to lead our Softball program” said Leckonby. “Mandy has been a successful player and coach in this Region for many years, and we look forward to welcoming her, Mike and Parker into the Catawba family.”
At West Georgia, Harris-Morgan took a 14-40 squad in her first season in 2012 to a 33-23 mark by 2016. While with the Wolves, she worked with all aspects of the program, including managing the budget, recruiting, fund raising and community engagement.
Harris-Morgan previously had served as head coach at Lynn University and was an assistant at the collegiate level at Georgia College and Wingate University. During her stint at GCSU, the Bobcats went to three regionals and finished fifth at the 2006 Division II World Series.
“I am so thankful to Mr. Leckonby and the committee for allowing me the opportunity to coach at Catawba,” stated Harris-Morgan. “Coach [Nan] Whitley and her family took great care in building this program over many years. I am really looking forward to getting to meet the team, the department and the community.”
A four-year starter at shortstop at Francis Marion, Harris-Morgan batted .314 over her career. In 2001, she earned All-Peach Belt Conference honors and was team MVP for the Patriots. That season she was also named to the GTE-Verizon Academic All-District II Team. Harris-Morgan was named the team’s top offensive player in 2000 and the top defensive player in 1999.
Harris-Morgan graduated from FMU in 2001, earning a degree in psychology. She earned a master’s degree in business administration from Wingate in 2004. The Plano, Texas, native is also a certified personal training, gaining certification from the American College of Sports Medicine in 2008. Before her collegiate career, Harris- Morgan made three international appearances in England and Holland with the Team Texoma Texas All-Stars.
Harris-Morgan stepped away from coaching in 2016 to start a family with her husband, Mike. The couple currently resides in Frisco, Texas, and have a son, Parker.
