Football Places Eight on SAC Preseason Teams, Picked Third in Preseason Poll

ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Catawba placed eight players on the 2018 South Atlantic Conference Preseason All-Conference Football Teams while being selected third in the league’s Preseason Coaches Poll.  Five of Catawba’s preseason members were named to the first team.

Four of the first team picks, were named as first team performers in 2017. Place kicker Lee Brackman, tight end Jourdan Osinskie, defensive back Cris Page and offensive lineman Quinzavious Sands earned first team honors from the SAC coaches last year. Running back Kenyatta Greene joins the group on the preseason first team.

Brackman led the league in field goals made, PAT’s made and points. He connected on 12 field goals, put 40 PAT’s through the uprights and scored 76 points. Osinskie hauled in 30 receptions for 400 yards with three touchdowns last season. Page made three interceptions and broke up a team-high 12 passes to go with 45 tackles. Sands started every game on the line and helped pave the way for Greene, who led the SAC in yards per rush, averaging 6.3 yards per carry. He rushed for more than 700 yards in 2017 with 25 receptions and crossed the goal line 13 for the Catawba Indians.

Defensive linemen Jordan Hemingway and Omar Staley were second team picks a year ago and made the preseason second time in 2018. They are joined on the second team by punter Caleb Berry. 

Hemingway posted 25 tackles with a pair of sacks last season. Staley accounted for 35 stops with three and half sacks. Berry averaged 38 yards per punt and had 16 of his 50 attempts downed inside the opponents 20-yard-line.

In the preseason coaches poll, Catawba was slated third behind Wingate and favorite Carson-Newman. Carson-Newman received four first-place votes and Wingate three. The Indians were followed by Newberry and then Tusculum, who garnered the other first-place vote. Lenoir-Rhyne, Limestone and Mars Hill rounded out the poll.
