Volleyball Snags Two Wins on Opening Day
FLORENCE, S.C. -- Catawba opened its season with a pair of volleyball wins at the Coker/FMU Invitational on Friday at the Smith University Center. Jade Brooks led the Catawba Indians with 32 kills over the two matches.
Catawba swept UNC Pembroke in the season opener, winning by the scores of 25-19, 25-21 and 25-19. Brooks hit at 34.4% in the win, posting 15 kills with just four errors. Kimberly Hurtado followed with 10 kills, while Micah Ensor recorded seven kills, 12 digs and three aces. Morgan Hester handed out 42 assists.
Trailing 14-12 in the opening set, Catawba ran off four of five points to lead 16-15 on a kill from Macy Eidenberger. Three Brave errors pushed the lead to 21-16. UNCP got within 21-19 before three straight Brooks kills. Another error gave Catawba the set.
The Lady Indians led throughout set two and pulled away with a five-point spurt to go up 13-7. UNCP trailed to rally late, but kills from Brooks and Allison Benton closed out the set. Catawba used to big runs to break a 9-9 tie in set three and grab a 22-14 edge and went on to take the match.
Brooks was solid again in a five-set win over host Francis Marion. Catawba took a 25-16, 19-25, 25-15, 19-25 and 15-9 victory with Brooks hammering down 17 kills.
FMU forced the final set, but Catawba prevailed. The teams traded points early before kills from Eidenberger and Brooks with an ace from Abby Benton pushed the Lady Indians up 8-4. The Patriots closed within 8-7 before three FMU errors and a kill from Ensor had Catawba up 13-8. The Lady Indians took the match when Allie Grubb blocked an attack then put away a kill.
The teams alternated wins in the first two sets. Catawba scored the final six points to take set one. Hurtado had two late kills. FMU won set two before Catawba snagged set three. The Lady Indians pulled away in set four with an 11-2 surge to lead 18-9.
Brooks added 11 digs to her 17 kills. Hurtado and Grubb each had 11 kills. Allison Benton posted 26 digs, while Hester provided 39 assists with 17 digs.
Catawba is back in action on Saturday, playing twice at Coker College. The Lady Indians will face Converse and Emmanuel.
