Volleyball Splits Saturday Matches in Coker/FMU Inv.
HARTSVILLE, S.C. -- Catawba split a pair of volleyball matches on Saturday at the Coker/FMU Invitational on Friday at Coker’s DeLoach Center. The Catawba Indians claimed a sweep of Converse before falling in three sets to Emmanuel.
Micah Ensor led a balanced attack in the win over Converse with eight kill as Catawba won by the scores of 25-17, 25-14 and 25-17. Kimberly Hurtado followed with seven kills and added three blocks.
After giving up the first point of the opening set, Catawba ran off seven straight to take a quick lead. The Lady Indians kept the lead throughout and took the set on a kill by Morgan Hester.
Set two was similar as four straight Converse hitting errors gave Catawba a 10-3 bulge. Back-to-back kills from Ensor pushed the lead to 22-9. Converse led 6-2 early in set three, but an ace by Morgan Harrison and two blocks from Hurtado keyed a 6-0 run for the Lady Indians. Another block from Hurtado gave Catawba a 19-13 edge and Harrison killed off match point.
Emmanuel took down Catawba in three sets in the final match of the weekend for the Lady Indians. Emmanuel won by the scores of 25-20, 25-13 and 26-24.
An 8-3 run midway through the opening set gave Emmanuel a 20-13 edge en route to the win. Emmanuel used a 10-1 run to lead 20-9 in taking the second set
Catawba tried to rally in set three, leading 11-6 and 17-10 before Emmanuel came back. Catawba reached set point at 24-21 before Emmanuel won the final five points.
Catawba travels to Florida for four matches next weekend. The first stop is in Tampa on Friday as the Lady Indians will face West Texas A&M and Tampa.
