Sanchez's Two Penalty Kicks Lifts Women's Soccer to Opening Win
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Jovana Sanchez scored a pair of penalty kicks to lift Catawba to a 2-1 season-opening win over Saint Anselm in women’s soccer action on Thursday afternoon at the Frock Soccer Complex. Sanchez notched the game winner with 3:45 remaining to snap a 1-1 tie.
The Catawba Indians took the lead in the 32nd minute as Saint Anslem was whistled for a foul in the box. Sanchez converted to put Catawba on top. That score would remain until the second half.
The Hawks tied the match shortly after the break. Caly Farina took a ball along the side and crossed a pass to Bailey Conti who converted from short range in the 49th minute. Sanchez would get another chance from the spot after a hand ball was called on a deflected shot just inside the top of the box.
Catawba enjoyed a 10-7 edge in shots and a hefty 8-3 margin in corner kicks. Shelby Thompson recorded four saves in goal for the Lady Indians. Payton Wildrick totaled four saves for Saint Anselm.
Catawba will travel to USC Aiken on Monday for a 3 pm match.
