Volleyball Falls Twice on Friday in Tampa
TAMPA, Fla. -- Catawba dropped a pair of matches on Friday at the Courtyard Marriott/Terrace Hotel Volleyball Classic at the Martinez Athletic Center. The Catawba Indians fell to 3-3 following losses to West Texas A&M and 25th-ranked Tampa. West Texas A&M moved to 4-1, while Tampa upped its record to 6-0.
Catawba opened with a three-set loss to West Texas A&M. The Lady Buffs won by the scores of 25-17, 26-24 and 25-16. The Lady Indians battled back from an early 6-1 deficit to lead late in set two. A kill from Allie Grubb put Catawba up 23-21 and another from Macy Eidenberger made it 24-22. West Texas A&M came back, winning the final four point then took the final set for the sweep.
Grubb posted nine kills to pace Catawba. Micah Ensor added eight kills and a pair of blocks. Kimberly Hurtado recorded three blocks, while Allison Benton totaled 17 digs. Morgan Hester handed out 22 assists and had six kills.
Host Tampa claimed a 25-17, 25-12 and 25-15 win in the night match on Friday. Grubb again led Catawba, collecting eight kills. Eidenberger and Hurtado each had five kills. Hurtado added a pair of blocks with Hester dealing 19 assists.
Catawba moves over to Lakeland, Fla., on Saturday to tangle with 23rd-ranked Florida Southern and Wilmington, Del.
