Volleyball Ends Weekend With Win Over Wilmington

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Catawba split a pair of matches on Saturday at the Courtyard Marriott/Terrace Hotel Volleyball Classic at Jenkins Field House. The Catawba Indians now stand at 4-4 after dropping a four-set match to host and 23rd-ranked Florida Southern then sweeping Wilmington, Del. FSC improved to 4-3, while Wilmington dropped to 2-6.

Catawba took a set off the nationally-ranked Mocs in its first match of the day, losing 25-15, 24-26, 25-10 and 25-19. Allie Grubb produced nine kills with three blocks in the loss. Jade Brooks and Kimberly Hurtado each had seven kills with Brooks adding 20 digs. Morgan Hester handed out 30 assists to go with 18 digs.

Florida Southern used an 8-1 run to open a 21-13 edge in the opening set and closed with the final four points. The Lady Indians won a back-and-forth second set with the final points. Macy Eidenberger had a kill and a Mocs hitting error ended the set.

FSC raced to a 14-2 edge as they cruised in set three. The Mocs put the match away in the fourth set, building an 11-10 lead to 21-14. Whitney Drost killed off the final point.

Against Wilmington, Catawba scored the first nine points and raced to an 18-1 bulge. Grubb served three aces in the early push with Brooks adding two at the start of the set. The Lady Indians trailed the second set 12-9 before rallying back. Eidenberger had two kills and a block in a run that gave Catawba a 21-16 edge.

Catawba jumped to a 7-2 lead in set three, but Wilmington fought back within 14-12. The Lady Indians rebounded and scored five straight points. Hurtado had two kills and a block during the run and would kill off the final point.

Eidenberger finished with 11 kills and had three blocks. Hurtado added 10 kills and four blocks. Grubb and Brooks each served four aces with Brooks adding eight kills and a dozen digs. Hester had 28 assists.

Catawba travels to Augusta for a tournament next weekend. The Lady Indians will face Barton and Augusta on Friday and West Alabama on Saturday.
