Catawba Sweeps Initial SAC AstroTurf Cross Country Runner of the Week Awards
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) -- Catawba has swept the first week of The South Atlantic Conference AstroTurf Cross Country Runners of the Week. The conference announced on Tuesday that Javier Alejandro was the Male Runner of the Week and Hannah Mercer was the Female Runner of the Week for meets competed in during the first week of the season.
Alejandro, a junior from Hope Mills, S.C. took home the individual championship at the season-opening Chick-fil-A Invitational, while also leading the Catawba Indians to a team championship. Alejandro completed the 8k course in 26:44, besting the next closest opponent by 12 seconds. The win marks the first individual win by a men’s cross country runner at Catawba since 2011.
This is Alejandro’s first Runner of the Week honor for the 2018 season.
Mercer, a junior from Lexington, N.C., earned her third consecutive Chick-fil-A Invitational championship last week and helped lead the Catawba Indians to a team championship as well. Mercer won the 5k event with a time of 19:57, defeating her closest competitor by 31 seconds.
This is Mercer’s first Runner of the Week honor for the 2018 season and second in her career.
