Men's Soccer Drops League Opener to Newberry
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Newberry shut out Catawba 3-0 in a physical match Wednesday at the Frock Soccer Complex. It marked the South Atlantic Conference opener for both teams.
The Indians were not able to over come playing a man down over the final 69 minutes of the match, after red card was accessed. They fell to 1-3 on the season, while the Wolves improved to 2-3-1.
Fabrizio Bucco gave Newberry the early 1-0 lead as he pounced on a shot by Ibrahim Nadir that was initially saved, just 85 seconds into the match. Nadir registered his second assist on the night when he fed Daniel Reyes, who finished with a sharp-angle shot in the 28th-minute. With less than a quarter hour left in the match, Nadir blasted a shot from the top of the box into the top right corner of the net for the final tally.
The Wolves out shot Catawba 20-11 and was called for 23 fouls, including five yellow cards, while Catawba tallied eight penalties.
Saturday’s game at Mars Hill has been postponed due to Hurricane Florence. The game will be rescheduled at a later date.
Catawba travels to Charlotte for a match at Queens Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
