Hester and Ensor Lead Volleyball to Five-Set Win at Queens
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Morgan Hester posted a triple-double and Micah Ensor delivered 18 kills as Catawba outlasted host Queens in a five-set South Atlantic Conference volleyball match on Tuesday night at Curry Arena. The Catawba Indians won by the scores of 25-19, 25-20, 23-25, 19-25 and 20-18 in improving to 5-8 overall and 1-1 in the SAC. The Royals fell to 6-6 and 2-3.
Hester finished the match with 53 assists, 12 digs and 10 kills to post her triple-double. She also added a block and a pair of aces. Ensor, with her 18 kills, was one of four Lady Indians to reached double digits in kills. Jade Brooks posted 14 kills and freshman Kylie Morgan added 13 to join Ensor and Hester. Allison Bentor produced 27 digs, Morgan 12 and Abby Benton 16.
Catawba won the first two sets and led 23-21 in set three folloing a kill from Ensore. Queens rallied after a time out with four points to take the set. The Royals got a kill from Casey Tarvin and a combo block by Tarvin and Gabbi Montgomery to tie it then an ace from Alexandria Becerra and a block by Montgomery and Olivia Williamson scored the final two points.
An eight-point run in set four put Queens up 11-7 and the Royals stretched the lead to 19-11 after a kill by Tarvin. Back-to-back kills from Logan Witt won the set. Queens jumped to a 7-3 edge in the final set, but Catawba ate into the deficit and finally pulled even at 13-13 on a kill from Brooks.
Two errors left the set tied before an ace by Libby Bickenbach gave Catawba its first match point, but a service error kept the match going. Brooks gave Catawba two more match points with kills, but each time Tarvin answered to keep it tied. A kill by Ensor got another point which was nullified by an attack error. The Lady Indians finally capitalized on a fifth match point as Allie Grubb killed a point for a 19-18 edge then ended the match with another kill.
Witt had a big match for Queens with 20 kills. Jordan Proszenyak followed with 13 kills and Tarvin posted a dozen kills. JayCee Jones served three aces and had 22 digs. Montgomery and Williamson each had four blocks.
Catawba is in action at Lenoir-Rhyne on Friday night at 7 p.m.
