Volleyball Succumbs to Mars Hill in Five Sets
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Mars Hill held on take a five-set win over host Catawba in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The Lions prevailed by the scores of 23-25, 25-20, 25-15, 24-26 and 15-12 to improve to 9-4 overall and 3-2 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians drop to 5-10 and 1-3.
Down two sets to one, Catawba forced the final set with a tight win in set four. Leading 23-20, the Lady Indians saw Mars Hill run off four straight points to lead 24-23. A kill by Kimberly Hurtado negated the match point and after a ball handling error, Morgan Hester served an ace to give Catawba the set.
The teams went back-and-forth in the fifth set, but tied at 10-all the Lions scored four stright points, three on Catawba errors. The Lady Indians pulled within 14-12 before a kill from Maddie Spurgeon ended the match. Catawba hit well in the opening set at 36%, but fell off over the final four sets to drop to 19% by the end.
Allie Grubb delivered 17 kills with four blocks to pace Catawba. Jade Brooks added 15 kills, while Micah Ensor had a dozen and Hurtado 11. Hester had 55 assists with 14 digs and three aces. Kylie Morgan produced 22 digs.
Elizabeth Kaeser led Mars Hill with 17 kills and four blocks. Spurgeon added 14 kills and four blocks. Sally Anne Johnson registered seven blocks.
Catawba will next travel to Lincoln Memorial on Tuesday to make up a match postponed by Hurricane Florence. The match is set for 7 p.m.
