Volleyball Knocked Off by LMU in Four Sets
HARROGATE, Tenn. -- Lincoln Memorial dropped the opening set then came back to top visiting Catawba in four sets in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Tuesday night at Mars Gym. The Railsplitters improved to 8-3 overall and 4-1 in the SAC, winning by the scores of 19-25, 25-17, 25-23 and 25-19. The Catawba Indians fall to 5-11 and 1-4.
Freshman Kylie Morgan collected 11 kills to pace the Lady Indians. Kimberly Hurtado added 10 kills with Allie Grubb posting four blocks and eight kills. Abby Benton recorded 22 digs and Morgan Hester provided 33 assists, 11 digs, three blocks and three aces.
Catawba hit at 22% in the opening set to take the lead then struggled in the middle sets with 21 hitting errors and just 20 kills. The Lady Indians picked it up in the final set to 21%, but LMU pulled away late in the set to grab the win.
The Lady Indians got off to a quick start as Hester and Jade Brooks served aces with Hurtado putting down two kills for a 6-1 lead. Catawba led the rest of the set, going up 19-12. LMU closed within four, but Micah Ensor would end the set on a kill.
Catawba matched its 6-1 start in set two, Brooks serving another ace with Morgan and Ensor recording two kills each. The Railsplitters rebounded and went on top for the first time at 16-15. Emily Walter had a pair of blocks to help LMU push ahead 21-16. Lindsey Nartker served back-to-back aces to end the set.
Set three was tight, but a block and kill from Tone Gill gave Lincoln Memorial a 24-22 edge. Catawba pulled a point back on an attack error by Nartker followed with a kill to end the set. Catawba came back from an early deficit in set four to lead 8-7. It was tight from there until a five-point LMU spurt put the hosts up 22-17. Alicia Kessler had two kills to start the run and Gill added an ace. Kills from Kessler and Rylee Storms ended the match.
Nartker and Gill each had 10 kills for the Railsplitters. Nartker added 11 digs with two aces, while Gill picked up five blocks and three aces.
Catawba will host Carson-Newman on Friday night at 7 p.m.
