Volleyball Repelled by Carson-Newman
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Carson-Newman downed host Catawba in three sets in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Friday night at Goodman Gym. The Eagles won by the scores of 25-20, 25-17 and 25-21 in improving to 7-5 overall and 3-2 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians move to 5-12 and 1-5.
Micah Ensor led Catawba with eight kills, while Kylie Morgan, Jade Brooks and Kimberly Hurtado added five each. Hurtado recorded three blocks, while Brooks provided 16 digs. Allie Grubb served a pair of aces.
Carson-Newman used big runs during the midpoint of each of the first two sets to take a commanding lead. A seven-point run in the opening set pushed the Eagles to an 18-8 edge. Catawba clawed back to within three, but consecutive kills Megan Oldenburger stimmed the Lady Indian rally. It was a 10-3 run in set two that separated the teams, pushing Carson-Newman to a 17-8 bulge.
Catawba hung tight in set three, leading 20-17 late in the set after a kill from Morgan. Carson-Newman regrouped to run off seven straight points. An ace by Taylor Rohr was followed by three straight Eagle blocks, two on a combo by Katie Parnell and Erin Edwards. Another ace from Rohr and a kill from Parnell pushed C-N to a match point at 24-20. After a side out, the Eagles ended the match on a kill from Oldenburger.
The Eagles were led by Edwards, who had 12 kills and three blocks. Oldenburger added 10 kills with 10 digs. Parnell produced six blocks and Rohr served three aces.
Catawba hits the road for the next four matches, starting with Wingate on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
