Volleyball Knocked Off in Three Sets by Wingate
WINGATE, N.C. -- After a tight first set, host Wingate went on to sweep Catawba in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Tuesday night at Cuddy Arena. The Bulldogs remain unbeaten at 14-0 and 7-0 in the SAC with the 26-24, 25-13 and 25-11 win. The Catawba Indians drop to 5-13 and 1-6.
Catawba nearly took the opening set using an early 4-0 run to go up 12-8. That spurt included an ace by Allison Benton and kills from Jade Brooks and Allie Grubb. The lead moved to 16-10 after a pair of Wingate errors.
Wingate eventually tied the set at 20, but a kill from Brooks and a combo block by Grubb and Micah Ensor had the Lady Indians up 23-21. The Bulldogs scored the next three points, two on kills from Reese Blackley to go up 24-23. Catawba fought off one set point, but Wingate got the final two points on kills from Taylor Williams and Phoebe Havenaar.
The Bulldogs rolled to a 10-2 lead to start set two. The Lady Indians cut the margin to 13-10 on a block by Jessica Walker, but after her kill made it 14-11, Wingate ran off another seven points and took the set. Wingate jumped out early in the final set, going up 10-3 and eventually 20-5.
Brooks posted eight kills to lead Catawba, while adding 19 digs. No other Lady Indian had more than three kills as Catawba hit just 10.2% for the match. Grubb picked up a pair of blocks, while Morgan Hester handed out 18 assists with 17 digs.. Benton served two aces.
Havenaar collected 16 kills for Wingate and recorded three blocks. Blackley followed with nine kills. Rachel Alles provided 34 assists, 16 digs and a pair of aces.
Catawba will travel south for its next two matches starting with Anderson on Friday night at 7 p.m.
