Indians Defeat Wingate 2-1

18_WSOC_ChambersJenniferWU
SALISBURY, N.C. – Catawba women’s soccer snapped an 11-game losing streak to Wingate with a 2-1 victory over the Bulldogs Wednesday at Frock Field.

The Indians (7-2-0, 3-2-0) had not beaten the Bulldogs (5-3-1, 2-2-0 SAC) since 2009, which was in the first round of the South Atlantic Conference tournament. The last time Catawba secured a regular-season victory over Wingate was nine years to the day, which was a 2-0 triumph Oct. 3, 2009.

“That was a really good performance, coming off a tough match at Tusculum last week,” Catawba Head Coach Nick Brown said. “I was happy with how we bounced back and excited for the program beating Wingate for the first time in nine years.”

The Bulldogs set the offensive tone early but Catawba remained scoreless until the final 20 minutes of play in regulation, mostly due to the great play by the Indians keeper, Shelby Thompson.

She made three key saves, keeping her team in the match. The first came in the 33rd minute, when McKenna Delong’s shot was headed for the top corner. Thompson dove and swatted the ball over the crossbar for a corner kick. Just two minutes later, she swatted a shot by Alicia Rubio Garcia over the bar.

In the 68th minute, Thompson made her best save of the night. Wingate was on a 2-v-1 break when an attacker on the left side placed a perfect pass across the face of the net and to the foot of Carly Olsen, who was stopped on the doorstep. Thompson tracked the pass and made a sliding two footed save, stunning Olsen.

“Shelby made a couple of big saves early to keep the match at 0-0 and the team rewarded her later on in the game,” Brown said.

The team netted two goals in the next 15 minutes, building a 2-0 lead, with nine minutes remaining.

Freshman Jennifer Chambers broke the scoreless tie and gave Catawba a 1-0 lead in the 72nd minute. She gathered in a loose ball on the near side from 25-yards out and blasted a shot off her right foot across the face of the net and into the top left corner.

In the 81st minute, freshman Courtney Reavis doubled the lead, when her attempted cross inside the box deflected off a Wingate defender and trickled past the Bulldogs’ netminder Abbey Frail.

Wingate cut the deficit to 2-1 when McKenna Delong scooped up a loose ball in the 6-yard box and found the back of the net, with 6:28 left.

“We knew we had to be very sharp to beat Wingate and I thought our players did a good job of staying sharp and working together defensively,” Brown said.

Inside the numbers:
- The Indians outshot Wingate 13-12.
- Wingate tallied four corners, while Catawba earned three.
- The Indians were whistled for 10 fouls and the Bulldogs were guilty of five.
- Thompson played all 90 minutes and made six saves, improving to 7-2-1 on the season.
- Frail registered 90 minutes in goal for the Bulldogs, recording five saves.
