Volleyball gets seventh straight win, ties for third in SACSALISBURY, NC – Catawba College claimed its seventh straight win, defeating visiting Wingate in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Friday night at Goodman Gym. The Lady Indians took the match in four games, winning by the scores of 30-25, 30-16, 16-30 and 30-27. Catawba improves to 19-11 overall and 10-4 in the SAC, while the Bulldogs fall to 21-7 and 10-4. Wingate, aided by five kills from Amy Darilek (Bellaire, TX), grabbed a 19-16 edge in the opening game. A pair of kills by Hope Miller (Newton, NC) brought Catawba within 20-19 and the Lady Indians took the lead at 21-20 on an ace by Elizabeth Hewitt (Hickory, NC). Consecutive kills by Sarah Godec (Euclid, OH) closed the Bulldog deficit to 24-23, but a kill by Crissi Harrison (Hickory, NC) gave Catawba a 25-23 edge and the Lady Indians would go on to take the game. The Lady Indians led 7-5 in game two when Hewitt delivered three blocks and two kills in a run that pushed the lead to 16-6. Barbie Baltimore (Reading, OH) had four kills to help bring Wingate within 24-15, but that was as close as the Bulldogs would get. The Bulldogs would roll to the win in game three. Four kills from Molly Kerns (Bellefonetaine, TX) helped Wingate to a 13-6 lead then Baltimore added four kills and an ace to up the margin to 21-12. Kerns added two blocks and a kill late in the game. Miller had three kills and Hewitt two kills and an ace to stake Catawba to an 8-2 lead in the deciding game. The Lady Indians would grab a 25-15 lead after a block by Nicole Scheidt (China Grove, NC), but Wingate would run off seven straight points to close the gap to 25-22. A kill by Hewitt ended the run and she later added another to give Catawba a 28-24 lead. Heather Hawkins (Troutman, NC) had the last of her six kills in the game to give the Lady Indians a 29-26 lead and Catawba won the match on a service error. Miller led Catawba with 17 kills and 29 digs. Harrison and Hawkins each had 10 kills. Hewitt posted four blocks, while Scheidt had 45 assists. Baltimore led Wingate with 14 kills and added 10 digs and three blocks. Kerns also had 14 kills and added five blocks. Danielle Thompson (Channelview, TX) had 10 kills and 24 digs.
