Men's Soccer Earns USC Team Academic Award
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba's men's soccer team earned the United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Award, the organization announced Thursday.
“We’re proud of our team and their efforts to be not just elite athletes, but elite student-athletes, said Head Coach Ken Hassler. "They work extremely hard both on the field and in the classroom so this is a great honor for our players.”
The award recognizes exemplary performance in the classroom during the 2017-18 academic year. It honors the academic achievements of student-athletes, who demonstrated a commitment to excellence in their studies throughout an entire academic year.
A total of 773 collegiate teams (289 men and 484 women) received the Team Academic Award, including 191 schools that had both men's and women's programs among the recipients. In order to qualify for the award, the team must have a 3.0 cumulative GPA during the previous academic season.
The Indians earned a cumulative GPA of 3.18 and was one of five South Atlantic Conference men's soccer programs recognized this year. Catawba joined Anderson, Lincoln-Memorial, Newberry and Queens as honorees from the league.
