Comeback falls short as Women's Soccer loses 4-3 to PCSALISBURY, NC Catawba College was on the verge of completing one of the most exciting comebacks in postseason play until Jennifer Merritt (Easley, SC) scored with exactly one minute to play in regulation to send the #3-seed Presbyterian Blue Hose past the #2-seed Lady Indians 4-3 in the semifinal round of the 2003 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Womens Soccer Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Frock Field. Presbyterian improves to 14-4 and moves on to the championship game on Sunday afternoon to take on the #4-seed Tusculum Pioneers at 1:00pm. Catawba ends its record-setting season at 16-4-1. The Lady Indians trailed 3-0 with 21 minutes to play in the game when Kyley Thompson (Hagerstown, MD) took a Jen Lowe (Enfield, CT) corner kick and fired it into the back of the net for her 13th of the year. In the 83rd minute, Jamie Fink (Woodbridge, VA) took a pass from Meagan Robinson (Belmont, NC) and chipped a shot from about 25 yards out to beat oncoming PC keeper Aimee Tatom (Irving, TX) and suddenly the Lady Indians found themselves in striking distance down 3-2. Just six minutes later, Thompson tied the game at 3-3 with her second of the night. Lowe started the play with a corner kick, a header from Fink then found Thompson for the equalizer with 1:42 to play. With 60 seconds to play, Merritt then tallied the game winner from 20 yards out just wide of Lady Indian goalkeeper Amanda Johnson (Charlotte, NC). Presbyterian jumped on the board first with five minutes left in the first half as Robin Phillips (Columbia, SC) took a free kick off a Catawba foul just outside the 18 yard box to put PC up 1-0 at the half. The Blue Hose didnt waste anytime building their lead in the second half. Six minutes into the second half, Megan Smith (Greenville, SC) scored her team-leading 17th goal off another Catawba foul, this one from about 25 yards out. PC would then take a seemingly commanding 3-0 lead when Smith assisted on a Claire Joyce (Aiken, SC) goal with about 21 minutes to play, then Catawba mounted its comeback.
