Volleyball's Rally Against Queens Falls Short in Five-Set Loss
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba rallied from two sets down to force a final set, but visiting Queens prevailed in five sets, taking a 25-17, 25-17, 23-25, 22-25 and 15-6 victory in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Tuesday night at Goodman Gym. The Royals improve to 11-11 overall and 7-8 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians move to 6-18 and 2-11.
Kimberly Hurtado led Catawba with 14 kills and seven blocks. Kylie Morgan added 10 kills with 22 digs, while also serving three aces. Allison Benton recorded 36 digs and Morgan Hester handed out 40 assists.
Casey Tarvin led Queens with 21 kills and 23 digs. Logan Witt and Jordan Proszenyak each had 13 kills. JayCee Jones collected 38 digs and Mallory Swarts had 45 assists.
Queens eased away in the opening set as Proszenyak snapped a 7-7 tie with a kill and an ace. Tarvin followed with back-to-back kills and an 11-7 edge. The lead grew to 20-12 following a kill by Chanel Turner. The Royals raced out to a 15-3 in the second set and were up 24-13 until a late Catawba run.
Catawba came back in set three, erasing an early 11-8 deficit to lead 14-13 on an ace by Jade Brooks. Morgan’s kill pulled out the set for the Lady Indians as the teams battled tightly down the stretch. Queens scored the first seven points of set four and led 10-2 before Catawba stormed back. A run that included four kills from Hurtado closed the gap to 11-10.
The teams would not be separated by more than a single point until a combo block by Hurtado and Morgan gave Catawba a 20-18 edge. Queens reeled off the next four points to go up 22-20 only to see Catawba close the set with five points in a row. Hurtado had a kill and two combo blocks with Hester before Morgan’s ace forced the final set.
Witt opened set five with two kills and two combo blocks with Tarvin for a 4-0 edge. A kill from Swatx made it 5-0. Catawba got within 6-4 after a block by Hurtado and Micah Ensore. The Royas zoomed ahead 11-4 after consecutive blocks from Lindsay Elmore and an ace by Swarts and went on to claim the match.
Catawba wraps up a four-match home stand as the Lady Indians host Lenoir-Rhyne on Friday at 7 p.m.
