Anderson Blanks Indians 2-0
SALISBURY, N.C. - Anderson blanked Catawba 2-0 in a physical match on Senior Day at Frock Field Saturday.
The Indians, who honored the lone senior Joe English before the contest, fell to 2-11-0 overall and 0-9-0 in South Atlantic Conference play. The Trojans improved to 5-4-3 on the season and 3-2-3 in league action.
Harry Ward registered the first shot of the tilt at the 6:27 mark, giving Anderson the 1-0 advantage. Jhon Vaca was credited with the helper. The teams battled in a defensive stalemate the rest of the first half, totaling three shots per side over the next 40 minutes of action.
Catawba's best chance to get back in the match came a quarter hour into the fixture when the Indians failed to capitalize on two shots from point-blank range. Catawba worked the ball up the left side and crossed into the six-yard box, where Tom Singhgolden was denied by Anderson’s sprawling keeper, Gal Elyashiv. The rebound bounced to a crashing Borja Gaspar, who missed an open net, pushing his shot wide of the far post. Anderson’s offense neutralized the Indian’s attack and Elyashiv was not threatened the rest of the game.
The Trojans ramped up the offensive pressure in the final period, outshooting the Indians 12-4 in the stanza, but netting just one tally.
Bar Galanti found Vaca in the middle of the box from the near side and Vaca beat Catawba’s goal keeper, Gianluca Tommasi, increasing Anderson’s lead to 2-0 in the 50th minute.
Inside the numbers:
- Anderson outshot Catawba 16-7 and held a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks.
- Tommasi played 90 minutes in net, making six saves.
- Catawba committed 10 fouls and three yellow cards, while Anderson picked up nine infractions and three yellow cards.
The Indians conclude the home portion of their 2018 schedule with a match against Belmont Abbey at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
