Sanchez's PK Lifts Catawba Over Chowan 1-0

18_WSOC_SanchezJovanaCHO
SALISBURY, N.C. - Sophomore Jovana Sanchez’s penalty kick in the 57th minute propelled Catawba past Chowan Wednesday at Frock Field.

The Indians improved to 12-3-0 after dominating pace of play and time of possession in the contest, smothering the Hawks, who fell to 7-6-1.

Despite setting the tempo, Catawba found it difficult to crack the scoreboard in the first half and the teams went to intermission deadlocked at 0-0.

Chowan took advantage of Catawba, switching from a defensive formation to an aggressive offensive tactic, sending balls over and through the Indians’ back wall. The Hawks misfired on several scoring chances early in the final period before Catawba caught them in transition, drawing a penalty inside the box.

Sanchez stepped to the penalty spot and blasted a shot in the rights side of the net past a diving Danielle Acree, who replaced Chowan’s starting keeper Olivia Borer, at the half.

Inside the numbers:
- The Indians recorded 20 shots and 20 corner kicks, holding Chowan to five attempts and three corners.
- Catawba improved to 7-0-0 all-time against the Hawks.
- The 11 wins is the most in a season for the program since 2012 when the team posted a mark of 13-7-0.
- Catawba improved to 9-1 at home, including 5-0 in non-conference action.
- The Indians allowed seven goals in 10 home matches, recording four shutouts and not allowing more than two goals in any contest.
- Catawba goal keeper Shelby Thompson earned her 12th win of the season and sixth shutout in 15 contests.
- Thompson lowered her career-best goals against average to 0.96, allowing 14 goals in 15 games.
