Women's Tennis Posts Tight Win Over Newberry
ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Catawba closed out its fall women’s tennis season by claiming a 4-3 win in a tight non-conference victory over Newberry. The Catawba Indians improve to 3-0 with the Wolves falling to 5-2.
The Lady Indians went up 1-0 after doubles. Erisa Onchi and Carolina Correia posted a 6-2 win at #1, while Lauren Laughton and Olivia Wooldridge prevailed 6-4 at #3. The singles were extremely tight with four of the matches decided in three sets.
Newberry eased ahead with wins at the top three flights, including three-set wins at #2 and #3. Wooldridge claimed a straight-set win at #6 then Laughton evened the match with her three-set win at #5.
Correia provided the winning point as she rallied from a set down. The freshman dropped the opening set 6-0 then evened the match with a tiebreak win in the second set. She would take the third set 6-4 to earn the win for Catawba.
Catawba returns to action on February 9 at home against Belmont Abbey at 10 a.m.
