Volleyball Drops Four-Set Match at C-N

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. -- Carson-Newman dropped the opening set, but rallied to post a four-set win over visiting Catawba in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Friday night at Holt Fieldhouse. The Eagles improved to 12-11 overall and 8-8 in the SAC with a 16-25, 25-20, 25-17 and 25-21 voctory. The Catawba Indians fall to 7-20 and 3-13.

Allie Grubb led Catawba with 11 kills and three blocks. Kylie Morgan followed with eight kills and produced 15 digs. Morgan Hester handed out 30 assists with four aces and 18 digs. Catawba hit 26% in the opening set, but fell off to just 11% for the match.

Catawba stomed out of the gates in the opening set, leading 12-2 . Jade Brooks served three aces in the early run. The Lady Indians kept the big lead throughout still up 20-10 with Grubb killing off Catawba’s final three points. Carson-Newman pulled away late to take set two. Up 19-18, the Eagles ran off five straight point with a pair of kills from Megan Oldenburger.

The Lady Indians led early in set three, but Carson-Newman came back to go up 12-11 on a kill by Natalie Harris. Morgan’s kill had Catawba within 16-14 before the Eagles eased ahead. A kill by Marnie Streeter made it 18-14 and Oldenburger’s kill pushed the lead to 21-15. Morgan Ballard ended the set with consecutive aces.

Carson-Newman got up 6-0 quickly in set four and held a 13-6 edge before Catawba rallied within 13-10 on a kill from Grubb. It was 22-15 when Catawba made a final run. An ace from Hester and a kill by Jaida Henderson trimmed the margin to 22-20 and another ace from Hester had Catawba within a point. Carson-Newman got a combo block from Erin Edwards and Katie Parnell then Oldenburger followed a Catawba error with a kill to end the match.

Oldenburger posted 18 kills with 17 digs and four aces for the Eagles. Streeter posted a dozen kills, while Harris and Parnell recorded six blocks. Ballard had three aces and 27 digs with Edwards adding five blocks.

Catawba heads to Tusculum on Saturday for a 2 p.m. match with the Poineers.
