DeShazo Scores 13 in Exhibition Loss at UNC Wilmington
WILMINGTON, N.C. -- Catawba fell 79-55 in a women’s basketball exhibition game against UNC Wilmington on Saturday afternoon at Trask Coliseum. Taisha DeShazo scored 13 points and Talia Barnes added 10 for the Catawba Indians. DeShazo added eight rebounds for the Lady Indians.
Catawba fell behind 32-13 after a quarter then held its own over the final three periods. The Seahawks had just a 47-42 edge over the final 30 minutes of action. UNC Wilmington canned 50% of its shots (25-of-50) for the game, while Catawba hit on just 33% (19-of-68).
UNCW began to move away late in the first quarter. Leading 8-5, the Seahawks went on an 8-2 run to lead 16-7. Wilmington took a double-digit lead at 19-9 with 4:35 left in the quarter. It was a 10-4 run to close the quarter that pushed the margin to 32-13. The Seahawks got to the line 16 times in the opening quarter and made 15 of those attempts.
Anna Gardner hit a pair of three-pointers and scored seven points for Catawba, while handing out a pair of assists. Marissa Bruce collected five points. Shemya Stanbeck had three assists and a pair of steals.
GiGi Smith led UNCW with 13 points. Lacey Suggs and Ashli Jeune each tossed in 11.
Catawba will open its season on November 9 at North Greenville with tip off set for 7:30 p.m.
