Volleyball Outlasts Tusculum Behind Morgan and Grubb


GREENEVILLE, Tenn. -- Catawba pulled out a marathon five-set South Atlantic Conference volleyball match on Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Arena. The Catawba Indians claimed the 25-21, 29-27, 21-25, 27-29 and 15-12 victory to up its record to 8-20 overall and 4-13 in the SAC. The Pioneers fell to 6-17 and 4-13.

Tusculum had rallied in the fifth set with three straight points to pull even at 12-12. Tatum Thornton was in on two blocks, while Catherin Clingan tied the set with an ace. An attack error put Catawba back on top at 13-12 and an ace from Morgan Hester gave the Lady Indians a match point. Catawba converted on a Tusculum attack error.

Kylie Morgan delivered a career-high 25 kills with 27 digs in the win for Catawba. Allie Grubb produced a career-best 21 kills with four blocks. Micah Ensor tallied 14 kills, while Hester handed out 69 assists with 23 digs and four aces.

Morgan had three straight kills in the opening set that put Catawba up 21-14. Tusculum came back within three points beofre a kill by Abby Benton ended the set. The Lady Indians fought off a pair of Pioneer set points in the second with a kill from Ensor and a block by Grubb. Catawba took the set on kills from Morgan and Ensor.

Tusculum battled back from a 6-0 deficit to start the third set, scoring six of the last eight points. The Poineers forced a final set with the win in the fourth. Catawba had tied the set at 22-22 on an ace from Morgan, but Tusculum followed with a kill by Taylor Blythe and the teams alternated points until Blythe followed a Gabby Gray kill with a block to end the set.

Gray led Tusculum with 19 kills, while Cassie Born added 16 kills, 14 digs and four blocks. Thornton recorded eight blocks, while Blythe had 10 kills and six blocks. Carli Pizga also had 10 kills and six blocks. Melissa Mazur collected 46 digs.

Catawba finishes the regular season with three home matches next week, starting with Coker on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. Catawba and Tusculum are a half game behind Coker for the final SAC Tournament spot. The Lady Indians will finish the season with a Saturday match against Newberry, who is currently a game behind Catawba and Tusculum.
