Volleyball Sits in Final Tourney Spot After Sweep of Coker
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba swept past visiting Coker in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Tuesday night at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians won by the scores of 25-21, 26-24 and 25-19 to improve to 9-20 overall and 5-13 in the SAC. The win also moves Catawba one game ahead of Coker and Tusculum for the final spot in the league tournament with two matches left. The Cobras fall to 12-15 and 4-14.
Kylie Morgan recorded 14 kills with 14 digs and two blocks to pace Catawba. Fellow freshman Jessica Walker tallied a career-high 10 kills, hitting at 47%, with five blocks. Morgan Hester handed out 34 assists with 11 digs and served three aces. Allison Benton also posted three aces.
After an early 12-8 lead in set one by Catawba, the teams battled tightly in the middle part of the set. A kill from Morgan and an ace from Hester pushed the Lady Indians ahead 20-18. Coker cut the margin to 21-20 on a kill from Taylor du Bray, but Catawba won the final four points. Abby Benton and Micah Ensor had kills to make it 24-20 and an error by the Cobras gave Catawba the final point.
Following a back-and-forth second set, Coker looked poised to even the match. The Cobras had rebounded from a 20-16 deficit to go up 24-22 on a kill from Olivia Cerick. Morgan rallied Catawba to the win, delivering four straight kills to give the Lady Indians a 26-24 win and a two-set edge.
The third set was tied at 10-10 before Catawba began to pull away. Four Coker errors put Catawba on top 14-10. A combo block by Grubb and Morgan was followed by two more Coker errors and a 19-13 Catawba lead. Kills from Walker and Morgan moved Catawba to match point, which Ensor converted after two kills from du Bray.
Coker was led by du Bray, who had 12 kills, 13 digs and a pair of blocks. Cerick added nine kills with 10 kills and two blocks. Kara Overholt posted 15 digs and Rami Mullen had 32 assists.
Catawba will host Anderson on Friday night at 7 p.m.
