Sweep of Newberry Puts Volleyball in SAC Tournament
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba claimed the final spot in the upcoming South Atlantic Conference Volleyball Tournament with a three-set sweep of visiting Newberry on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians posted a 25-21, 25-13 and 25-15 win to improve to 10-21 overall and 6-14 in the SAC. The Wolves end their season at 8-19 and 3-17.
Catawba battled back to win the opening set. The Lady Indians trailed 17-13 before a 6-1 run put Catawba on top. The run was started by Kylie Morgan kill and a block by Walker. Walker followed an ace by Hester and a kill by Allison Benton with her own kill for the 19-18 edge.
A kill from Ensor and a Morgan ace put Catawba up 21-19. The lead moved to 24-20 after a Walker kill and two Newberry errors. Angela Gore got one point back for the Wolves, but Ensor killed off the set point.
The Lady Indians jumped to an 8-3 edge in set two before Newberry rallied within 12-11 after a kill from Vanessa Blas. Catawba took control from there as kills by Abby Benton and Walker along with an ace from Morgan and a kill from Ensore upped the lead to 17-11. The margin went to 21-12 after an ace from Brooks and Ensor had aces on two of the final three points to end the set.
Catawba completed the sweep as it pulled away midway through set three. Consecutive blocks by Allie Grubb and two Newberry errors took the Lady Indians to a 13-9 edge which eventually moved to 18-11. Brooks served two aces to make the score 23-14 and Catawba won the match on kills from Ensor and Benton.
Catawba hit at 32% in the match and served 14 aces.
Blas and Toni-Anne Whitlow each had eight kills and two blocks for Newberry. Mary Siebert collected 13 digs, while Sidra Triplett handed out 17 assists.
Catawba will travel to Wingate for a first round match in the tournament on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
