Volleyball Falls to Wingate in SAC Tournament Opener
WINGATE, N.C. -- Catawba bowed out of the South Atlantic Conference Volleyball Tournament, falling to top-seeded and 24th-ranked Wingate in three sets on Tuesday night at Cuddy Arena. The Bulldogs posted a 25-22, 25-13 and 25-16 victory in improving to 27-1 overall. The Catawba Indians end their season at 10-22.
Wingate jumped to a 6-1 lead in the opening set and held a 13-6 edge when Catawba rallied back. A six-point run by the Lady Indians had Catawba on top at 16-15. A kill by Morgan gave Catawba a 21-20 edge, but the Bulldogs scored the next four points to go up 24-21. Ensor had a kill for Catawba before Phoebe Havenaar ended the set on a kill for Wingate.
Set two was tight early before Wingate went on a 10-2 run to expand a 12-10 lead to 22-12. It was a surge midway through set three that propelled the Bulldogs to the sweep. A 10-1 run snapped a 6-6 tie and spurred Wingate to a 16-7 lead which stayed near 10 points the rest of the way.
Havenaar led Wingate with 11 kills. Molly Lambillotte added nine kills with 11 digs. Rachel Alles served four aces and handed out 36 assists for the Bulldogs.
