Lady Indians Fall in Season Opener 67-62

TIGERVILLE, S.C. - A late charge by Catawba comes up short in a 67-62 loss to North Greenville in the season opener at Hayes Gymnasium Friday.

Trailing 62-49 with five minutes, 38 seconds remaining in regulation, the Indians rattled off eight consecutive points. The run cut the 13-point deficit to five.

A layup and a 3-pointer pushed the Crusaders’ lead back to 10, at 67-57, with just over a minute left.

Catawba trimmed the lead back to five after Talia Barnes completed a three-point play at the charity stripe and Shemya Stanbeck added a fast-break lay-up.

North Greenville led 37-34 at the half and carried a seven-point advantage into the final period, outscoring the Lady Indians 14-10 in the third.

The difference of the game was outside shooting by the Crusaders, who made 45 percent of their attempts from behind the 3-point arc. Catawba was successful on just 23 percent of its tries from distance.

Taisha DeShazo led the Lady Indians with 16 points, making 5-of-15 from the field. She sank five of her six free throws and grabbed a team high seven rebounds. Madison Hallman added 11 points, while Stanbeck registered five steals.

North Greenville was led by Karen Donehew, who notched a double-double with 18 points and 10 points. Kira Bell added 14 points and Bree Stoddard dropped in 11.

The Lady Indians wrap-up the two-day South Atlantic Conference / Conference Carolinas Challenge, hosted by North Greenville, Saturday against Erskine at 2 p.m.
