SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba got 26 points from Marcell Haskett and another 19 from Malik Constantine in a 115-82 romp over visiting Francis Marion to open the 2018-19 men’s basketball season on Friday night at Goodman Gym. The opener for both teams were part of the SAC/PBC Challenge.

Haskett drilled five three-pointers and hit on 9-of-12 shots and keyed the Catawba run over the final 10 minutes that put the games. The junior transfer scored 23 of his 26 points after the break. Constantine led the Catawba Indians in the opening half with 13 points, helping build a 53-35 bulge at the break.

The Indians canned an amazing 24-of-29 (83%) of their shots in final half and hit on 67% (43-of-64) for the game. FMU shot 43% and were outrebounded by the Indians 46-22.

Leading 14-10 after eight minutes, Constantine provided the spark that upped the margin to double digits. He scored eight points in a four-minute span which included three-pointers by Carter Phillips and Haskett to push the lead to 28-16 at the 7:15 mark. Jordan McElveen’s basket at the buzzer gave Catawba its largest lead of the half at 53-35.

The Patriots closed the gap to 10 early in the second half, but couldn’t get within single digits. Haskett, who had already hit a pair of three-pointer in the half, hit his last two and added three-point play during a 14-1 run that ballooned the lead to 86-63 with 7:58 left and put the game away.

Catawba also got double-digit scoring efforts from Devin Cooper (13 points) and Jameel Taylor (10 points). Taylor added eight assists and grabbed five rebounds. Constantine went 6-of-8 from the floor, was perfect on six shots at the line, and produced seven rebounds.

Brandon Parker paced FMU with 19 points. Ryan Davis knocked down 16 with Jaquez Smith scoreing 13. Kailex Stephens came off the bench for 10 points and five rebounds.

The 115 points matched the most points Catawba has ever scored in a home opener. The Indians began the 1972-73 campaign with a 115-72 victory over Shorter on Nov. 24, 1972. The most points in a season-opener came at then Atlantic Christian (now Barton) on Nov. 20, 1982 with Catawba claiming a 118-105 win.

Catawba will tangle with UNC Pembroke on Saturday at 2 p.m., while Francis Marion caps the Challenge versus Newberry at 4 p.m.
