TIGERVILLE, S.C. -- Erskine pulled out a tight battle with Catawba, taking an 86-80 decision at the South Atlantic Conference/Conference Carolinas Women’s Basketball Challenge on Saturday afternoon at Hyes Gymnasium. The Flying Fleet even their mark at 1-1, while the Catawba Indians fall to 0-2.

Talia Barnes led Catawba with a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds. Mercedes Wampler came off the bench to scored 13 points with six boards. Taisha DeShazo netted 11 points with Shemya Stanbeck collecting 10. The Lady Indians struggled from deep, making just 4-of-25 (16%) from behind the arc.

Erskine led the entire first quarter, going up 17-10 late in the period. Catawba rallied in the final two minutes to trail 18-16 after the opening 10 minutes. Marissa Bruce drew Catawba level for the first time since the top on her jumper to knot the game at 23-all with 6:29 left in quarter number two. Wampler put the Lady Indians up for the first time at 29-27 with 3:39 to go before the break. Erskine managed a 37-36 lead at the half.

The Lady Indians held the lead most of the third quarter and went up by seven after a three-pointer by Elizabeth Webb at the 7:11 mark. Catawba took a 64-63 lead heading to the final 10-minute period. Erskine eased ahead by five midway through the quarter and though Catawba cut the margin to one on several occasions, the Lady Indians could not pull even.

A second-chance basket by Alexis Scott, after a Catawba turnover, put Erskine up 80-77 with 1:11 to go and Emani Bell sank two free throws following a Catawba miss to push the margin to 82-77 with 22 seconds remaining. Bell and Scott each sank a pair of free throws in the final 10 seconds to keep Erskine ahead.

Megan Davis led Erskine with 21 points. Scott added 20 points and 11 rebounds with Bell canning 16 points. Myranda Parham scored a dozen points with 10 rebounds.

Catawba heads to Lees-McRae on Thursday for a 7 p.m. tip with the Bobcats.
