Football Falls to Lenoir-Rhyne
HICKORY, N.C -- Lenoir-Rhyne finished off an undefeated conference mark, topping visiting Catawba 63-21 in South Atlantic Conference football action on Saturday afternoon at Moretz Stadium. The 17th-ranked Bears improve to 10-1 overall and 7-0 in the SAC and head into next week’s NCAA II Playoffs. The Catawba Indians fall to 3-7 and 2-5.
The Bears scored on six of their first seven possessions to built a 42-0 lead. Catawba scored late in the half on a 17-yard pass from Ken Avent III to Demonte Good. Avent accounted for two more scores in the third quarter, hitting Lovelle Williams on a 18-yard pass and rushing for a two-yard score.
Avent completed 12-of-27 passes for 184 yards. Jourdan Osinskie caught four passes for 66 yards. Devonte Tanksley ran the ball for 42 yards on six carries.
Caine Crews led a LR ground game that produced 412 yards. He had 129 yards on 12 carries. Dareke Young added 78 yards and Ameen Stevens another 68. Stevens and Kenny Carter ran for two scores. Grayson Willingham went 9-of-14 in the air for 170 yards and two touchdowns.
LJ Melvin produced 10 tackles, including a sack, for Catawba on defense. He also forced a fumble. Chris Thompson had an interception. Jordan Hemingway was in on three stops for losses.
Catawba will wrap up its season at home on Saturday, hosting UNC Pembroke at 1 p.m.
