NEWBERRY, S.C. – Any thought of a win in the South Atlantic Conference opener for Catawba women’s basketball was dashed in the middle of Monday’s contest against Newberry.

The Wolves, who entered the game with a 6-0 overall record and 1-0 in conference play, utilized a 16-4 run in five minutes and 40 seconds to pull away from the Lady Indians. With the 63-53 loss, Catawba is 2-3 on the season and 0-1 in league action.

Trailing by five in a nip-and-tuck affair in the first 17 minutes, the Lady Indians appeared poised to stay within striking distance heading into the half. Catawba’s sophomore guard, Shemya Stanbeck, hit a jumper with 3:21 left in the opening 20 minutes, cutting her team’s deficit to 20-17.

Newberry netted eight of the next 10 points and went to the locker room with a comfortable 28-20 edge. The biggest basket for the Wolves during the stretch was delivered by Courtney Lyons. Her heave at the buzzer, which was good from 30-feet away, swung momentum in favor of the home team.

The Wolves picked up where they left off, matching the 8-2 run over the final three minutes of the first half, with an identical spurt in the first 2:34 of the third quarter. The Wolves grabbed a 36-21 advantage, posting its largest lead of the game.

Catawba fought to cut the deficit to single digits on several occasions over the final 17 minutes but never got closer than seven points down.

Taisha DeShazo led the Lady Indians with 16 points and seven rebounds. Elizabeth Webb tallied 12 points, while Stanbeck recorded 10 points and seven boards.

Newberry was led by Shelby Britten, who registered a game-high 25 points. Lyons and Georgia Elliott-King added 13 points apiece. Catawba held the reigning United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) National Player of the Week, Meg Essex, to just eight points but she corralled a game-high 12 rebounds.
