Pittman's 400m Win Highlights 13 School Marks at JDL Early Bird Duels
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Catawba opened its indoor track and field season on Sunday at the JDL Early Bird Duels at the JDL Fast Track. The Catawba Indians set 13 records over the 18 events entered with freshman Brien Pittman highlighting the opening meet with a win in the 400m.
In addition to Pittman’s win, Catawba would record 18 top 10 finishes. Darius Turner was second in the 60m and seventh in the 200m, while Justen Burnette was second in the 200m and ninth in the 60m. Kierra McNeill finished fifth in the women’s 60m, while Akeena Maxwell took seventh. TJ Patton was eighth in the men’s 60m hurdles and the men’s 4x400 relay team of Pittman, Braxton Ford, Turner and Tom Joyce, who was 10th in the mile, claimed ninth.
The Indians put three in the final of the men’s triple jump. Jones Carter took third, Joey Monfort fifth and Nolan Chilton eighth. Carter was ninth in the long jump with Terrell Johnson finishing fourth. Candace Swepson placed fifth in the women’s weight throw with Danielle Ortiz taking ninth. Elyjah Thomas took ninth in the men’s weight throw.
Pittman set a school mark in winning the 400m. Other tracks records were set by Patton in the 60m hurdles, Turner in the 60m, Burnette in the 200m, Kierra McNeill in the women’s 60m and 200m along with the men’s 4x400 relay. Field marks were set by Swepson in the women’s shot put and weight throw, Shakalya Robertson in the women’s long jump and triple jump, Johnson in the long jump and Carter in the triple jump.
Catawba is back in action after the holiday break, participating in the Finn Pincus Invitational on Jan. 25-26 in Salem, Va.
