Defense Lifts Catawba over Elizabeth City State

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – DaQuan Lilly’s second-consecutive double-double leads Catawba past Elizabeth City State for the second time in 17 days Tuesday at the Robert L. Vaughn Center.

The 68-51 victory extended the Indians’ winning streak to six, improving to 7-1, while the Vikings dropped to 3-6.

Lilly tallied 19 points, going 8-for-11 from the field, including his one attempt behind the 3-point line. He converted 2-of-4 opportunities at the free-throw line and corralled 10 rebounds.

Malik Constantine converted 6-of-9 shots from the field, including 2-of-3 from deep and both shots at the charity stripe, totaling 16 points. Jameel Taylor added 10 points and eight boards.

With the game even at 4-4, three minutes into the contest, Lilly scored five straight points, as his team outscored the home team 29-13, over the final 16:38 of the opening half. The Indians went to the locker room with a comfortable 33-17 lead.

Catawba turned up the defensive pressure, allowing two made baskets the first six minutes of the final period, capitalizing on a 14-5 spurt. Constantine closed the run with a lay-up at 14:14, producing the largest lead of the night at 47-22.

- Catawba went 26-of-59 (44.1 percent) from the field, including 6-of-21 (28.6 percent) from behind the arc.

After an 11-day hiatus from competition to focus on final exams, Catawba returns to Goodman Gym Saturday, Dec. 15, for a South Atlantic Conference contest with Mars Hill. The men tip-off approximately 30 minutes after the women’s game, which tips at 2 p.m.
